From a simple DIY simmer pot to natural essential oil sprays and candles, these methods not only smell great but also create a cozy atmosphere in your home.

Plus, incorporating natural ingredients like citrus and herbs means you can control the scent, avoiding anything overpowering or synthetic. With just a few easy swaps, you can enjoy a cleaner and more fragrant home naturally.

1. Create a Simmering Pot

A simmering pot is the best way to give your home an inviting scent using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen. I’ll show you what I recently used and rough measurements, but really just use up anything that sounds good!

All you need to do is throw a mix of apple slices, orange slices, a splash of vanilla, a drizzle of maple syrup, and some cinnamon (or any combination of ingredients you have) into a pot of water.

Let it simmer on the stove for several hours and your house will smell amazing. Say goodbye to unpleasant odors!

ingredients for your simmering pot

Here’s What I Used:

  • 1 Tablespoon Maple Sryup
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Orange/Clementine Sliced
  • 1 Apple Sliced
  • 1 Spoonful of Nutmeg, Cinnamon, & Ginger

Other Ideas:

  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Peppermint Extract
  • Lemon Slices
  • Fresh Rosemary, Mint, or Thyme
  • Cranberries
  • Lavender

Add everything to a pot with water and place on the stovetop! I like to bring it to a gentle boil then immediately reduce the heat to a simmer.

I’ll let it simmer for hours on end. Depending on what elements I’ve included in my simmer pot, I’ll even save it for the next day and simmer it again. I’ll be honest, these don’t scent my whole house. The smell reaches through the kitchen into the living room and of course the hallways, but of course it’s not going to reach upstairs or in far away rooms.

I’ve also seen people do these in a slow cooker so if you have success, please let me know!

2. Run Lemon Through Your Garbage Disposal

Using lemons in your garbage disposal is the ultimate hack for getting rid of bad smells in the sink! Not only will it clean the garbage disposal but it also kicks out quite a fresh scent. Your sense of smell will thank you.

If you love the smell of lemons and want a citrusy scented kitchen, try this method. Slice up a lemon into wedges. Place them in the garbage disposal and turn it on. Leave the peel on!

3. Use Natural Candles

Most candles are pretty toxic with harmful chemicals (we’re looking at you – Bath & Body works candles!). Thankfully, there are actually some great options on the market now though that contain natural ingredients. The natural way is the best way!

Primally Pure has become a new favorite brand. I recently switched to their deodorant but noticed they sell candles, too! This brand is of the highest standards and I trust their products.

As a person concerned about holistic wellness, I would use these candles! I’m thinking about adding them to my Christmas list. They would make a great gift.

Pick which scent you think would make your house smell the best and you’d enjoy the pleasant scent of! A scented candle always make a home feel cozy.

4. Natural Room Sprays

Most articles out there will give you all the ideas for DIY room sprays you can make using essential oils and all the works. By the time you buy all of the ingredients and spend the time making DIY room sprays you may as well have just bought the Primally Pure room sprays. They are as natural as it gets!

Here’s an blurb from their website —

“The perfect replacement for traditional toxic air fresheners, this spray will not only improve the health of your home but will also alleviate stress, elevate your mood, and encourage a deep sense of well-being.”

There really aren’t many natural air freshener on the market (at least good quality ones that I’ve seen) so I’m excited that Primally Pure offers these now in different scents. Yes please to non-toxic ingredients!

5. Open Your Windows

Ahh the obvious here.. but maybe you haven’t thought of it! You house might just need some fresh air. It’s a great way to reduce the “stuffiness” of a home. A little direct sunlight and the smell of fresh flowers does wonders for a clean home.

Plus, it will provide an escape for any bad odors or scents. It’s an easy way to make your house smell better without spending a penny!

6. Essential Oil Diffuser

If you love the scent of essential oils, here are a few options. Use an essential oil diffuser in certain rooms with unpleasant odors. Reed diffusers also work!

A few drops of your favorite essential oil on the carpet actually helps, too!

Once again, I’m going to have to recommend Primally Pure. They do sell a wide range of essential oils as well. If you’re a naturally minded mama, this is going to be your new favorite brand!

7. Linen Spray on Couches, Chairs, & Furniture

A few drops of your favorite essential oil on furniture can really help! Even on carpets or chairs a few drops help.

Or, try linen sprays with natural scents. You can find a great DIY linen spray that is very natural here. They go a long way. I’m sure you can find plenty of great DIY recipes out there for different fragrances if you have one in particular in mind.

Conclusion

Creating a home that smells fresh and inviting doesn’t have to involve harmful ingredients or artificial fragrances.

By using natural methods like DIY simmer pots, essential oils, or a simple lemon and baking soda combination, you can enjoy a clean, good smell all throughout your space. Added bonus if it gets rid of lingering odors!

These easy and effective solutions not only improve the smell of your home but also contribute to a healthier environment. With a few simple changes, you can enjoy a naturally fragrant home that feels both welcoming and refreshing.
