1. Above Cabinet Sign

Maybe you don’t need decor ON the kitchen cabinets.. maybe you need decor on the WALL! I love this idea because it keeps things very clean looking but adds the needed interest. Of course you can grab this one or find another horizontal piece of art that you love (and that fits) to display.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be specifically for the top of kitchen cabinets. As long as the art fits I say you can make it work on top of your cabinets.

Farmhouse Wooden Plaque
I’m also thinking this sign might work in some spaces.. it would look great over kitchen cabinets on the wall!

You can even get one with a personalized family name on it for a personal touch on the top of the kitchen cabinets.

2. Alternate Between Plants and Baskets

This idea could not be simpler. I love it! Just alternate between some rattan or woven baskets and some faux plants. I think it looks the best if the plants are matching like in this photo below for a cohesive look. I do like the variation in the baskets on the top of cabinets, though.

4 Square Baskets for Storage
I’m loving this set because they have multiple sizes available. So, you can figure out how large or small you would want them based on the dimensions of your cabinets.

Don’t these remind you of handmade baskets?

For faux plants, I’m thinking this set of 2 would do the trick! Seems like they would be the perfect size.

3. Just Leave it Empty

Ready for the easiest idea in the book? Just quit worrying about it and leave it EMPTY! Yep, that’s right. Sometimes less is more and that is definitely the case with that space above your kitchen cabinets. Especially if its small spaces and just a slight gap between the cabinets and the ceilings, just leave it a blank space.

Now sometimes it really does look boring and need some decor (like if the kitchen cabinets are also the exact same color as your walls) but in cases like in the photo below, I think there is enough contrast and interest in the kitchen that it actually looks just fine that this homeowner decided to skip decorating over the cabinets.

4. Decorative Pitchers or Ginger Jars

Ginger jars are my FAVORITE. I am truly loving all of the grandmillennial inspired ginger jars I’ve seen on Amazon lately but they also have some chic farmhouse or modern style ginger jars too. Decorative pitchers are always a hit for building an accent wall, too.

You can’t go wrong with a classic white ginger jar! This would be the best choice if you have any accent colors already in your kitchen.
Green Rim Pretty Pitcher
We can’t forget about a pretty pitcher, though! You can pull this down off the cabinet for parties to serve drinks out of. Love some decor that has a functional purpose!

5. Decorative Plates

Have you considered displaying some fancy plates over your cabinets? It’s the perfect place for them! You might need to purchase a few stands or find a decorative plate that comes with stand. This is a great idea for kitchens with higher ceilings.

Ceramic Decorative Plate with Stand
This is a gorgeous decorative plate. I think if you got two of these, put a faux plant in between them, and called it a day on your above kitchen cabinet decorating you’d be happy with the result!

Or, use shallow baskets in the same way as plates and display them in a plate stand just as you would a plate! Actually, I’m sure you could find lots of decorative items that would work in a plate stand holder!

Something like this is what I’m thinking for displaying the plates or shallow baskets. Really any circular object is what we’re going for here!

Aren’t these decorative elements fun over the kitchen cabinetry?

6. Labeled Food Storage Jars

An easy way to decorate those cabinet tops? Use that extra space for storage! You can get some cohesive clear jars and label them. Store noodles, rice, beans, flour, and more. This is great if you don’t have a ton of pantry space. What a simple solution!

This pack is a great for storing lots! It’s so handy to get 8 in the set.

I also love this idea for open shelving. There are plenty of ways to merge style with functionality in a modern kitchen.

7. Tin or Metal Baskets

If you have a farmhouse decor style, tin or metal baskets are a great idea for using up those high ceilings. They really look best on their own as to not clutter the area above your kitchen cabinets. But, that’s good news for you because you don’t have to worry with figuring out what other decor to grab!

Various Other Decor Pieces for Above the Kitchen Cabinets

Now, another idea is to pick 4-5 decorative pieces or focal point finds to style together over the upper kitchen cabinets. I’m a big fan of this idea because you can pick things that fit your home decorating style and create a one of a kind display. I’ve sourced Amazon for the best of the best so including below a few pieces I would consider.

Cake Stand

I think storing your cake stand (if it’s pretty) is a great way to optimize the tops of the cabinets. Now your cake stand doubles as decor!

If you don’t have a cake stand, this one is really pretty! You might need one if you ever host an event where you would want to serve cake.

Conclusion

Decorating above your kitchen cabinets can really make your kitchen stand out. You can put up vintage dishes, plants, or some cool artwork to show off your style. You don’t need to fill up much space. Just add a few things to make it pop!

Mix different textures and colors to make your kitchen feel cozy and inviting. Just remember, it’s all about what you like and making your kitchen a place you enjoy. So go ahead, get creative, and have fun decorating!
