4-Ingredient Play Dough Recipe (with items you already have at home)

Play dough

We’re going to need a lot of indoor activities this winter. This easy, basic play dough recipe can be a go to when you are looking for a fun activity to change it up. All of the ingredient are already likely in your home, and for the toddlers who put everything in their mouth (all of them!), this recipe made of all food grade items.

  • ½ cup flour
  • ¼ cup salt
  • ¼ water
  • Food coloring

The steps are simple: mix the flour and salt, add water slowly and kneed. Then kneed in the food coloring. If you are only making one color, you can actually just add the food coloring directly to the water before adding it in! If it is too sticky, just add more flour. Pro tip: I store mine in a ball jar with some flour too. It helps it from getting too sticky.

For older toddlers/ kids, making the play dough can actually be part of the activity!

Benefits of play dough play:

  • Enhances fine motor skills
  • Creativity and imagination
  • Develops hand-eye coordination
  • Has a calming effect
  • Can actually improve pre-writing skills
  • And most importantly…its fun!
